More Than Just Shingles: Helping a Tacoma Veteran Stay Covered

At the end of the day, we’re roofers. We spend our lives on ladders and ridgelines. But every once in a while, a project comes along that reminds us exactly why we do what we do. This past October was one of those moments.
We teamed up with the folks at Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity for the National Roof Deployment Project. The goal was straightforward: get a local Tacoma veteran a new roof, free of charge.
Why we showed up for Nancy
The recipient this year was Nancy Traversy. Nancy is a veteran and a surviving spouse right here in our community. Her roof had seen better days, and it was reaching the point where “fixing a leak” just wasn’t enough anymore.
Through the Veteran Roof Project, Habitat for Humanity handled the vetting and paperwork, Owens Corning donated every single shingle, and our crews at Guardian volunteered their hands and their time to get the job done.
It wasn’t just another Tuesday at the office. As our President, Matt Rzidlo, put it: “Building a roof may be our trade, but helping a veteran feel safe and proud in their home is something far more important.”
Roots in Tacoma
We’ve been working as roofing contractors in Tacoma for a long time. We know these streets, and we know the people. Being able to give back to someone who gave so much for our country? That’s the kind of work that makes the sore muscles worth it.
See the transformation
We actually caught the whole process on camera. You can see the crew in action and hear a bit more about what this meant for Nancy in the video below:
To Nancy, and every other veteran in the South Sound—thank you for your service. We’re just glad we could return the favor by making sure you’ve got a solid roof over your head.
